INSTRUCTIONS TO ADD PRINTERS VIA IP ADDRESS

 

Here are new add printer instructions to set up any printer on the network.  All we need is an IP address of the printer.  To obtain the IP address, print out a configuration page and look for the IP address - it will be a number such as 10.104.100.56.

 

 

HP Printers:

On a Windows 98 machine, unfreeze the workstation (if DeepFreeze is loaded), then you can set it up by going to Add printer, select Local Printer, next, i.e. - HP, Laserjet 4300, (if it is a new printer, you will need the cd for drivers or check here (http://docushare.southsanisd.net/dscgi/ds.py/View/Collection-870) - put the cd in before you start this process so you can close the cd wizard) select next, next, choose lpt1, name it whatever, next, no to test page, finish.  Now, rt click on the printer, select properties, details, add port, other, local port, okay, type in the IP address (i.e., 10.41.100.2 for the HP 4300), okay, apply, then print out a test page.  (Rt. click on the printer, properties, general, print test page).  If the test page does not work, then you need to download the HP Add Printer Wizard from http://docushare.southsanisd.net (10.200.0.12), under CTC, HP Printer Wizard.  Run the wizard if it lets you, otherwise download it to your desktop (to install the wizard, select yes to older version, next, yes, next, next, and finish).  To install the printer, run the wizard from this location, just select yes to continue anyway, next, select specify printer by address (the IP address you obtained from the configuration sheet), next, input the IP address, next, let me configure my own settings, next, no to test page, choose windows TCP/IP communication mode from the dropdown, next, use current one if listed or choose a different driver if you have the cd, choose the cd drive, install, and finish.  No print something to see if it works.

 

Xerox Printers:

On a Windows 98 machine, unfreeze the workstation (if DeepFreeze is loaded), download the Xerox Printer Tool Wizard http://docushare.southsanisd.net/dscgi/ds.py/View/Collection-1479, unzip it to a folder on c:, then run the setup.exe from that folder.   Choose Install/Upgrade Port Monitor, okay and okay to install the Xerox port.  Then you can set it up by going to Add printer, select Local Printer, next, Have Disk (if it is not in the list), this is where you will choose the driver you downloaded and extracted from DocuShare.  i.e. - Xerox, DCS 35.  Drivers can be found here (http://docushare.southsanisd.net/dscgi/ds.py/View/Collection-870) or downloaded directly from http://www.xerox.com/.  Select next, choose lpt1, name it whatever, next, no to test page, finish.   Now rt-click on the printer you just added, select Properties, Details, Add Port, choose Other, and select Xerox TCP/IP port from the list, okay, next, Select auto-discovery and select the IP address for the printer you want to install, give it a name such as technology Xerox DCS35, leave it on standard port, unknown, next and finish.  Now print something to see if it works.  Questions call Technology, 977-7375.

 

On a Windows NT, 2000 & XP machine, unfreeze the workstation, then you can set it up by going to Add printer, select Local Printer (be sure to uncheck autodetect plug n play), select create a new port, choose standard TCP/IP port from the drop down list, next, type in the IP address of the printer (i.e. 10.1.00.00 for the HP 4300), the port name will fill in automatically, then next, choose standard device type, pick i.e. HP network printer (Xerox, etc.), finish, HP, i.e. LaserJet 4300, next, wait, next, do not share if asked, next, next, finish.  If you get an error printing the test page, go to the details of the printer, (select it from the start, printers list, rt-click on properties, ports, highlight the TCP/IP HP port, choose configure, and change the protocol to raw, select okay, and then print another test page (properties, general, print test page).

DHCP is set to hold the IP address, but if the IP address changes, print out the configuration page with the new address, fax it to and I will change it back via telnet.
